Brian Inman says he always imagined turning his webcomic work into a TV show, but never expected the project to spring from the Exploding Kittens universe.
He admits he treated the game as “just a game” for a long time, until its momentum made a series inevitable — and, yes, he jokes that fans can thank godcat for the turn of events.
Now, the animated take on Exploding Kittens is available to stream on Netflix.
The plot spins a cosmic comedy: when God and the Devil descend to Earth, they find themselves trapped in the bodies of domestic cats — and they happen to live next door to each other.
Godcat, the self-styled creator of the perfect planet (think idealized sunsets and improbable wildlife), is tasked with helping a dysfunctional human family, but first must wrestle with a deep dislike of humankind and outmaneuver his feline rival, devilcat, to earn a way back to the heavens.
On mic, Zamata and Ellis developed quick-fire chemistry that felt almost destined. Zamata calls their rapport lucky — or “divine” — while Ellis quips it’s one of those blessed coincidences.
The show grew out of the smash-hit card game of the same name, which has sold over 35 million copies worldwide and centers on a deck of 56 cards where drawing an exploding kitten normally ends the round unless you can defuse it with a tool like cat toys or catnip.
But Inman says he didn’t try to force the card-game mechanics into a straight adaptation. The cards are jokey and chaotic, so the creative team built an original narrative — the best vehicle being the idea of God inhabiting a house cat — then sprinkled in fan-friendly easter eggs and references to other titles from the studio.
You don’t need to know the card game to enjoy the series, the cast agrees; Zamata jokes she’s played a few times and is still not convinced she fully gets all the rules — only that she once won.
Real-life pets also informed the characters. Inman has long observed how his cats act like they run the household, which inspired godcat’s regal entitlement; the stereotype “dogs have owners, cats have staff” helped shape the premise. He also liked that the feline mystique could easily be twisted into devilish behavior for devilcat.
Ellis drew from his own pair of cats — named Cain and Abel — when shaping his performance. Abel, Ellis says, is the quintessential aloof, judgmental cat who grants affection on their own terms, and that temperament fed into the character work.
Zamata, meanwhile, jokes she doesn’t have many real cats to consult — but she does have a lifetime’s supply of devils, including a persistent sleep-paralysis demon that’s kept her company for years.
